Morning. Your Japan Airlines flight JL742 departs Los Angeles LAX at 1:05 PM on Sunday, May 24, and lands at Tokyo Narita International Airport Terminal 2 at 4:35 PM on Monday, May 25 — a long transpacific journey that earns every moment of luxury ahead. Clear customs and immigration at Narita (allow 45–75 minutes for baggage and border formalities), then make your way to Arrival Hall B where your Shangri-La Tokyo limousine representative will be waiting at the exit holding a Shangri-La Tokyo signboard.

Afternoon. Your private chartered transfer (JPY 49,000, billed to room) whisks you from Narita Terminal 2 to the Shangri-La Tokyo in approximately 60–80 minutes depending on expressway traffic — sit back, enjoy the changing Tokyo skyline as you approach Marunouchi, and decompress from the flight. Check in at the Shangri-La Tokyo, Marunouchi Trust Tower Main, where your FHR Executive Suite on the upper floors awaits with sweeping city views; as Fine Hotels + Resorts guests you enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi, a $100 USD property credit, and guaranteed check-in from 3:00 PM.

Evening. Once settled and refreshed, consider a relaxed first night in the Marunouchi and Tokyo Station Ichiban-gai neighborhood — the illuminated Imperial Palace East Gardens moat promenade is a serene 10-minute walk and a gorgeous soft introduction to Tokyo. If energy levels allow after the flight, the hotel's Horizon Club lounge on Level 37 is perfect for an evening drink with panoramic city views, or head out to the low-key Virtu Bar nearby for a nightcap before an early rest to beat jet lag.

The limousine driver will not display your name for privacy — look for the Shangri-La Tokyo signboard in Arrival Hall B; if you cannot locate them after 15 minutes, call the hotel directly at +81-36-7397888.

Set your devices to Japan Standard Time (JST, UTC+9) immediately on landing and try to stay awake until at least 9 PM local time to accelerate your jet-lag adjustment before the packed days ahead.

After the ceremony ends around noon, you're already in one of Tokyo's most photogenic neighborhoods: stroll Nakamise-dori shopping street leading to the thunder gate (Kaminarimon), step inside the magnificent Senso-ji Temple complex, and browse the artisan vendors lining the approach.

Afternoon. Make your way from Asakusa toward Shinjuku (approximately 40 minutes by subway) for a light lunch en route, arriving by 2:30 PM to locate the Shinjuku Sumo Club on the 2nd floor of Sekisaku Building, 2-chome 5-22, Okubo, Shinjuku. After the show wraps around 4:15 PM, explore the neon-lit streets of Kabukicho or duck into Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) for the atmosphere before heading toward Minato.

Evening. Your dinner reservation at RistoPizza by Napoli sta ca (Azabudai Hills, Tower Plaza 3F, 1-3-1 Azabudai, Minato-ku) is confirmed for 6:00 PM — one of Tokyo's most talked-about Italian openings, serving authentic wood-fired Neapolitan pizza and handmade pasta in a stunning architectural setting inside the Azabudai Hills complex. The kitchen has been informed that Rachel is gluten-sensitive (no actual allergy), and a special anniversary dessert plate with 'Happy Wedding Anniversary — Kevin & Rachel' will arrive as a sweet surprise. Allow time after dinner to wander the Azabudai Hills terrace and gallery district.

The Kimono Tea Ceremony at Maikoya does NOT include hotel pickup — take the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line from Marunouchi to Asakusa Station (about 20 minutes); your kimono will be available to wear around the Senso-ji area after the ceremony, so plan photos near Kaminarimon and Nakamise-dori while still dressed.

Azabudai Hills has paid underground parking but no convenient subway stop directly underneath — take a taxi from Shinjuku (approximately 20–25 minutes, ¥2,000–¥2,500) or use the Toranomon Hills Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, then walk 8 minutes.

Morning. Start with breakfast at the Shangri-La Tokyo before heading into the Ginza and Chuo district for a cultural morning. The Mori Art Museum at Roppongi Hills opens at 10:00 AM and offers world-class contemporary exhibitions with sweeping city views from Level 52 — an inspiring cultural warm-up before the day's main events. From Roppongi, it's a 10-minute taxi ride into Ginza for a leisurely exploration of the galleries, flagship boutiques along Chuo-dori, and the iconic Itoya stationery store, a multi-floor paper and design destination beloved by creative travelers.

Afternoon. After a light lunch in Ginza, make your way to the Kamagi Crystal experience at 5:00 PM — a must-see appointment confirmed for this afternoon where the interplay of light, glass, and precision craftsmanship creates a meditative, unforgettable visual journey. Allow yourself to be fully present in the experience; the late afternoon light makes the crystal effects especially dramatic. Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early, as the experience runs on a fixed schedule.

Evening. Your confirmed dinner reservation at Kyubey Ginza (久兵衛 銀座), 8-7-6 Ginza, Chuo-ku, awaits at 6:00 PM — one of Tokyo's most storied sushi institutions, where Edo-mae tradition and the finest seasonal seafood converge at the counter. Dress smart casual (no sneakers, shorts, or flip-flops, and keep fragrance minimal out of respect for the seafood), and surrender to the itamae's seasonal selection; the snow crab, uni, and otoro nigiri are perennial highlights. The restaurant is approximately 20 minutes by taxi from the Shangri-La Tokyo.

Kyubey Ginza has a strict smart casual dress code — no sneakers, cropped pants, shorts, or heavy cologne; counter seats give you direct interaction with the chef, so feel free to ask questions about each piece of nigiri being prepared.

The Kamagi Crystal appointment is at 5:00 PM sharp — build in a 10-minute buffer from Ginza (it's walkable or a very short taxi ride) so you are not rushed leaving the sushi counter afterward.

Morning. Begin with the FHR breakfast at the Shangri-La Tokyo, then head to the Harajuku and Omotesando neighborhood — one of Tokyo's most vibrant cultural corridors. Stroll the famous tree-lined Omotesando boulevard (Tokyo's answer to the Champs-Élysées) and duck into Takeshita Street in Harajuku for the exuberant street fashion and crepe culture that defines Tokyo's youth scene. The Nezu Museum, just a short walk from Omotesando, houses a superb collection of pre-modern Japanese and East Asian art alongside one of the most serene bamboo gardens in the city — an ideal quiet contrast before the afternoon's high-energy plans.

Afternoon. Make your way to Shibuya Scramble Square for your Shibuya Sky experience — check-in is confirmed between 3:35 and 3:50 PM, so plan to arrive at the Shibuya Sky reception desk by 3:30 PM sharp. The champagne set at 4:00 PM on the open-air rooftop observation deck (229 meters above the city) offers arguably the most spectacular panoramic view in all of Tokyo, with the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing far below and Mount Fuji visible on clear days to the west. The champagne service is a fitting toast to Kevin's birthday — raise a glass with the entire city at your feet.

Evening. Your confirmed birthday dinner reservation at Yakiniku Kappo Note is at 5:30 PM — a celebrated wagyu yakiniku restaurant where the evening unfolds as a kappo-style course featuring meticulously selected Japanese Black beef cuts grilled tableside over binchotan charcoal. The reservation is noted as celebrating a birthday, so expect a gracious and personalized experience from the staff. Allow the evening to linger over the meal; this is one of Tokyo's most refined yakiniku experiences.

Shibuya Sky check-in is timed (3:35–3:50 PM) — if you miss the window you may forfeit your slot; set a phone alarm for 3:20 PM and take the dedicated elevator from the 14th floor of Shibuya Scramble Square's ticket counter.

Harajuku Gyozaro is cash-only and extremely small (about 10 seats), so an early lunch arrival is key; afterward, the walk from Harajuku toward Omotesando through Yoyogi Park (especially lush and green in late May at approximately 73–77°F / 23–25°C) is one of Tokyo's loveliest mid-day strolls.

  6. AfternoonLake Ashi
  7. AfternoonHakone Ropeway
  8. AfternoonOwakudani Volcanic Valley

Morning. An early start is essential today: your private licensed tour to Mt. Fuji and Hakone departs at 7:30 AM, so request the Shangri-La Tokyo's early breakfast service the night before and be in the hotel lobby by 7:15 AM for your guide's arrival. The approximately 60-mile (97 km) journey southwest from central Tokyo takes roughly 90 minutes by private vehicle, with the iconic silhouette of Mt. Fuji gradually filling the windshield as you approach the Fuji Five Lakes region; your English-speaking guide will provide rich historical and geological context throughout. At Fuji, visit Chureito Pagoda viewpoint (one of Japan's most photographed compositions), then the shores of Lake Kawaguchiko for reflections and photo opportunities before ascending to the 5th Station area on the Subaru Line for crisp mountain air at approximately 7,546 feet (2,300 m) elevation — temperatures at the summit base can drop to the high 40s°F (around 9°C) even in late May, so pack a light jacket.

Afternoon. After Mt. Fuji, your private tour continues into Hakone — a celebrated hot-spring resort town nestled in the volcanic caldera with extraordinary views back toward Fuji. Visit the Hakone Open-Air Museum, Japan's first open-air art museum featuring over 120 sculptures by Picasso, Moore, and Rodin set against mountain scenery, then cross Lake Ashi by sightseeing boat with Fuji as a backdrop on clear days before boarding the famous Hakone Ropeway for aerial views over the steaming Owakudani volcanic valley. The full tour runs approximately 10 hours total, returning you to the Shangri-La Tokyo by roughly 5:30–6:00 PM.

Evening. Tonight is designated for in-room dining — after a 10-hour private tour covering roughly 18–20 miles (29–32 km) of walking and sightseeing, your bodies will deeply appreciate the Shangri-La Tokyo's exceptional room service menu. Order a curated selection from the all-day dining menu (the Japanese wagyu tenderloin, seasonal miso soup, and yuzu sorbet are consistently praised), draw a deep bath in the Executive Suite, and reflect on the extraordinary scale of what you witnessed at Fuji today. Early to bed sets you up perfectly for the next packed day.

Mt. Fuji is famously shy — late May sees approximately 30–40% clear visibility due to early-season cloud formations and atmospheric haze; if the summit is cloud-covered, the Chureito Pagoda composition and Lake Kawaguchi reflections remain stunning regardless, and your guide will adapt the itinerary to maximize what is visible.

Pack a light fleece or wind jacket specifically for the 5th Station stop, as temperatures at 7,546 feet (2,300 m) are typically 15–20°F (8–11°C) cooler than Tokyo's late-May average of around 73°F (23°C) in the city.

Day 6 · Tokyo

Morning. Begin your Saturday with a leisurely FHR breakfast at the Shangri-La Tokyo before making your way to the Yayoi Kusama Museum in Shinjuku, where your 11:00 AM timed entry () opens the door to 'KUSAMA's POP' — a riot of polka dots, infinity mirrors, and pumpkin sculptures spread across five intimate gallery floors. Present your QR codes at the entrance within 30 minutes of the 11:00 AM slot and allow the full 90-minute immersive window to absorb every room without rushing.

Afternoon. After the museum, stroll through the leafy streets of Shinjuku toward Takashimaya Times Square or the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (approximately 0.6 miles from the museum) for a relaxed early afternoon picnic-style light lunch among the manicured lawns and rose gardens in bloom. By mid-afternoon, return to the Shangri-La to freshen up and prepare for the evening — tonight is a birthday celebration, so take your time getting dressed before heading to Shibuya.

Evening. Head to Shibuya for your 5:45 PM birthday dinner reservation at Wagyu Yakiniku Nikutarashi inside the Kikuchi Building — a sleek, intimate yakiniku counter where A5 Wagyu is grilled tableside and every cut is chosen for marbling perfection. Note that the restaurant is cashless only (credit card, QR code, or Apple Pay accepted) and a 10% service charge will be added; settle in and celebrate Koosha's birthday in true style over premium cuts and Japanese whisky pairings until the evening winds down.

The Yayoi Kusama Museum has no cloakroom, so travel light — bring only a small bag and store valuables in the Shangri-La safe before heading out, as large items are not permitted inside the gallery.

Nikutarashi is cashless: confirm your credit card is tap-enabled or that Apple Pay is set up on your phone before leaving the hotel, as the restaurant does not accept cash under any circumstances.

Morning. Wake up for your final full day in Tokyo with the included FHR breakfast at the Shangri-La before heading to teamLab Planets Tokyo in Toyosu for your confirmed 10:00–10:30 AM entry window — allow yourself to wade barefoot through the legendary Floating Flower Garden, be swallowed by the Universe of Water Particles room, and lose all sense of scale in the Crystal Universe. Note that a 30-minute-plus wait upon arrival is common even with timed entry, so arrive at the venue by 9:45 AM to queue ahead of your slot.

Afternoon. After teamLab, take a taxi or the Yurikamome Line back toward central Tokyo and spend a relaxed early afternoon exploring the Hamarikyu Gardens (approximately 1.5 miles from Toyosu), a stunning Edo-period tidal garden where a traditional teahouse sits on an island connected by arched stone bridges — perfect for a quiet farewell moment with the city. Return to the Shangri-La by 3:00 PM to begin packing and preparing for your 3:00 PM luggage transfer to Kyoto, ensuring all bags are ready at the Bell Desk on time.

Evening. At 5:30 PM, make your way to the Tapas Molecular Bar at the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo in Nihonbashi — one of Tokyo's most theatrical dining experiences, where Chef's tweezers and liquid nitrogen transform each bite into a miniature work of art across a 20-plus-course molecular tasting menu. Sahar's gluten-free dietary restriction has been noted on the reservation, and the Dinner Course Only upgrade for both guests (totaling ¥58,190) ensures the full theatrical experience; dress elegantly and arrive five minutes early to be seated at the open counter.

The 3:00 PM luggage transfer to Kyoto is a hard deadline — have all bags tagged and at the Shangri-La Bell Desk no later than 2:45 PM, keeping only a small overnight bag for your final night, as you check out at 12:00 PM tomorrow.

Dress smartly for the Tapas Molecular Bar — while not strictly black-tie, the intimate counter setting and theatrical service call for smart-casual attire at minimum, and the Mandarin Oriental staff will appreciate the effort given the occasion.

Evening. Tonight is your wedding anniversary dinner at ITOH DINING KYOTO, where your 6:30 PM reservation has been confirmed under Gholam, Sahar with the occasion noted. At the Maikoya Gion Kiyomizu kimono ceremony, opt to stroll the Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka stone-paved lanes immediately afterward — you will still be in full kimono, and these lantern-lit alleys are among the most photogenic spots in all of Japan, especially in the late-afternoon golden hour before your 6:30 PM dinner.

The Philosopher's Path is best walked north to south (Ginkakuji to Nanzenji) on busy days to move against the main tourist flow, but today begin at Nanzenji and head north so you finish near the Hikinikutocome lunch reservation direction.

After breakfast at The Ritz-Carlton, take a taxi west to the Arashiyama district (approximately 30 minutes, 5 miles) for a stunning morning among Kyoto's most iconic natural landscapes — enter the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove at 9:30 AM before the midday crowds thicken, then walk five minutes to Tenryuji Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to explore its celebrated Sogenchi Pond Garden, where raked gravel and borrowed mountain scenery create one of Japan's most perfectly composed garden views. Continue along the Oi River to Togetsukyo Bridge for panoramic photos of the Arashiyama mountain range before heading back toward central Kyoto by noon.

Afternoon. At 2:00 PM, report to Yushinkan Dojo at 452-4 Matsugaechō, Nakagyo Ward — look for the entrance behind the blue vending machine down the spiral staircase next to Red Rock Kyoto on Rokkaku-Dori. Your samurai training session with Yushinkan Co., Ltd. (SETO Yushin) is conducted entirely in English and includes a training zinc-alloy katana, full training gear, and bottled water; the operator confirmation is 'osayo.' Allow approximately 90 minutes for the full session, which returns you to the meeting point upon completion, leaving time to shower and relax at the hotel before the evening.

Evening. At 6:00 PM, take your counter seats at Kiyama 木山 (#9086184567502) — one of Kyoto's most exclusive sushi-kaiseki counters, where the evening omakase is priced at ¥30,250–¥36,300 per person and the chef's precision rivals the finest establishments in Japan. Note the strict no-perfume policy at Kiyama, so avoid applying fragrance after showering; Sahar's dietary restrictions (gluten-free, no pork, gelatin and soy fine) have been communicated via the Ritz-Carlton concierge, and the 100% cancellation fee applies from 10 days prior — this reservation is non-negotiable.

The no-perfume rule at Kiyama is absolute — both guests should avoid applying cologne or perfume after the post-dojo shower, as the intimate counter environment means even light fragrance can affect neighboring diners and the restaurant may ask you to wait outside.

For the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, arrive as close to 9:30 AM as possible — by 10:30 AM the main path becomes heavily trafficked; the side lanes toward Okochi Sanso Villa Garden offer a quieter and equally beautiful alternative if the main grove feels crowded.

Morning. Depart The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto at 9:00 AM for a full-day excursion to Nara, roughly 45 minutes south by express train from Kintetsu-Kyoto Station. Begin at Tōdai-ji Temple, home to the world's largest bronze Buddha housed inside Japan's largest wooden structure, then stroll through Nara Park where hundreds of free-roaming sika deer greet you at every turn — the deer are designated national treasures and will bow for shika senbei (deer crackers) sold by park vendors for around ¥200. By 11:00 AM, walk the stone-lantern-lined path to Kasuga Taisha Grand Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in 768 CE, whose moss-covered bronze lanterns number over 2,000 and create an ethereal atmosphere even in daylight.

Afternoon. Enjoy a light lunch in Nara's Naramachi district around 12:30 PM before returning to Kyoto by 2:15 PM to allow time to freshen up at the hotel. Your Nintendo Museum entry window opens at 4:00 PM in Uji City — allow 45 minutes travel time from the hotel, taking the Kintetsu Kyoto Line to Kintetsu-Kokura Station and walking roughly 5 minutes to the museum at Kaguraden 56, Ogura-cho; QR code tickets (assigned to Gholam Sahar and Saghari Koosha) can be displayed directly from your phone and were made available for download from 2:00 PM the previous day (June 3). The museum traces Nintendo's century-long history from hanafuda playing cards through every beloved console generation, with dozens of hands-on interactive exhibits that easily fill 90 minutes of joyful exploration.

Evening. Return from Uji to central Kyoto by taxi or train, arriving back in the Gion district by approximately 6:00 PM to allow a brief walk along Hanamikoji-dori before your reservation. At 6:30 PM (18:30), sit down at Gion Katana ぎおん 刀 (Phone: 075-541-5500) for a set-menu dinner centered on Japanese charcoal-grilled cuisine at intimate counter seating — dietary restrictions for Ms. Sahar Gholam (gluten-free, no pork, gelatin and soy fine, cross-contamination acceptable) have been noted with the restaurant. The crackling binchotan charcoal, seasonal ingredients, and Gion atmosphere make this a fitting celebratory dinner to cap your Nara adventure.

Download your Nintendo Museum QR codes to both phones the evening of June 3 as soon as they become available at 2:00 PM — the venue does not allow re-entry if QR codes fail to load, and purchased tickets cannot be canceled once codes are issued.

In Nara Park, secure your deer crackers (shika senbei) before entering the main deer congregation area rather than after — vendors closer to Tōdai-ji often sell out by midday on weekdays in early June, and the deer will persistently nudge bags they can smell.

  5. AfternoonTsutenkaku Tower

Morning. Depart The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto at 9:00 AM for Osaka, just 15 minutes from Kyoto Station on the JR Shinkansen (or 30 minutes on the JR Special Rapid Service), making it one of Japan's easiest and most rewarding day trips. Start in the vibrant Dotonbori entertainment district, Osaka's beating heart, where neon signage, canal reflections, and the iconic Glico Running Man billboard greet you by 9:45 AM — cross the Ebisubashi Bridge and follow your nose toward takoyaki (octopus ball) stalls that are already open. By 10:30 AM, make your way to Kuromon Ichiba Market, a 600-stall covered market nicknamed 'Osaka's Kitchen,' where vendors offer fresh seafood, wagyu skewers, grilled scallops, and seasonal produce at stalls that have been trading for nearly 190 years.

Afternoon. After a leisurely market stroll and light street-food lunch around 12:30 PM, head to Osaka Castle Park by 1:30 PM — the magnificent 16th-century Osaka Castle, rebuilt in 1931 and recently renovated, houses a compelling eight-floor museum charting the Sengoku period and the rise of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, with panoramic views of the city from the observation deck on the eighth floor (entry ¥600/adult). By 3:30 PM, explore the Shinsekai district, an Art Deco-era neighborhood centered on the retro Tsutenkaku Tower, where old-school kushikatsu (deep-fried skewer) restaurants line every alley and the nostalgic 1950s atmosphere feels worlds away from modern Osaka. Depart for Kyoto by 4:30 PM to ensure a relaxed evening at the hotel.

Evening. Return to The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto by approximately 5:15 PM and take time to unwind with a bath or a quiet moment on your river-view balcony before this final full evening in Japan. Tonight calls for in-room dining — the hotel's room service menu offers beautifully curated Japanese and Western selections, from wagyu donburi to seasonal kaiseki-inspired bento sets, and the Kamogawa River glowing softly below your Grand Room window sets an irreplaceable scene for your last night as a couple in Kyoto. Order at your leisure, open a bottle from the minibar, and linger over the evening — tomorrow morning brings your departure.

At Kuromon Ichiba Market, the freshest and most theatrical vendors are concentrated in the middle third of the covered arcade — arrive by 10:30 AM on a weekday for the best selection before the midday tourist rush thins the premium stalls.

When taking the JR Special Rapid Service from Osaka to Kyoto, board the front carriages at Osaka Station for the quickest exit at Kyoto Station, and hold your IC card (Suica or ICOCA) rather than hunting for a ticket — the gate tap-in/tap-out process is seamless and saves several minutes.

Morning. This is your final morning in Japan — savor every moment of it. Enjoy your complimentary FHR breakfast for two at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto's restaurant one last time, with views of the Kamogawa River bathed in early summer light, before returning to your Grand Room to pack and prepare for checkout. Checkout is confirmed at 12:00 PM (June 6); if any last personal moments in the city appeal — a final stroll along the Kamogawa riverside path or a quiet visit to the adjacent Nijo Castle grounds — the hotel's location puts both within easy reach before you settle your bill at the front desk.

Afternoon. Check out of The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto by 12:00 PM (Hotel ) and arrange a private transfer or taxi to Kyoto Station, approximately 10 minutes away, to board the Shinkansen toward Shin-Osaka and onward to Kansai International Airport. Your Japan Airlines flight JL60 departs Osaka Kansai International Airport (KIX) at 17:45 — allow a minimum of 90 minutes before departure for international Business Class check-in, security, and immigration, meaning you should aim to arrive at KIX no later than 3:30 PM. From Kyoto Station, the Haruka Limited Express runs directly to KIX in approximately 75 minutes, so plan to board by 1:40 PM at the latest; alternatively, arrange a private car transfer (approximately 90 minutes door-to-door from the hotel) for added comfort with your luggage.

Evening. Once through KIX security, make your way to the Japan Airlines First Class Lounge or Business Class Lounge on the departure level to unwind with a final glass of sake or shochu before boarding. Flight JL60 departs at 17:45 in JAL Business Class (Sky Suite III) for both Mr. Koosha Saghari and Ms. Sahar Gholam — both passengers pre-selected the Washoku (Japanese Cuisine) meal, and the 10 hours 20 minutes westbound crossing will deposit you at Los Angeles International Airport at 12:05 PM the same day (June 6), giving you the afternoon back in Tustin to reflect on an extraordinary anniversary and birthday trip.

The Haruka Limited Express from Kyoto Station to KIX accepts IC cards (Suica/ICOCA) for the base fare but requires a separate limited express supplement ticket purchased at the JR ticket office or green ticket machines — purchase this the night before or first thing in the morning to avoid a midday queue at the station.

At KIX, the Japan Airlines Business Class check-in counters for international departures are located in the main terminal building on the departure level; allow extra time to pass through Japan's immigration departure card process, which requires filling out a paper departure record — the hotel concierge can supply these forms and help you complete them before you check out.

Hidden gems

Yakitori Alley (Yurakucho Gado-shita) · Tokyo — Just a 10-minute walk from Shangri-La Tokyo, the smoky low-ceilinged yakitori stalls tucked under the train tracks at Yurakucho are a quintessential Tokyo experience. After the jet-lag haze of arrival and before the Virtu bar visit, a quick stand-up skewer and Sapporo here grounds you in the city immediately. Arrive between 5:00–6:00 PM when the salarymen crowd starts filling the plastic stools. Pair it with the walk along the outer moat of the Imperial Palace nearby.

Ameya-Yokocho Market (Ameyoko) · Tokyo — On your way to or from Asakusa for the Maikoya tea ceremony, detour through this half-mile open-air market street in Ueno — it dates to post-WWII black market days and sells everything from dried seafood to vintage sneakers. Morning energy here is lively but not yet crushed by crowds; you can browse between 10:30–11:30 AM after the ceremony wraps. The stalls selling taiyaki and fresh fruit cups make for a perfect light snack between sites. It's completely free to wander and extremely photogenic.

Nakamise-dori Back Streets, Asakusa · Tokyo — After the Maikoya kimono ceremony wraps, skip the crowded main Nakamise shopping lane and duck into the narrow perpendicular side streets (Shin-Nakamise and the covered Rokku Broadway arcade). These quieter alleys have old-school toy vendors, sembei rice cracker roasters, and retro Japan vibes dating to the Showa era — a genuine time-capsule detour before heading to Shinjuku for sumo at 3:00 PM. Budget 30–40 minutes and bring small yen bills for street snacks.

Ginza Six Rooftop Garden · Tokyo — Before your 6:00 PM Kyubey sushi reservation in Ginza, arrive at Ginza Six (a 5-minute walk from Kyubey) and ride to the rooftop garden on the 13th floor — it's free, offers sweeping views over the Ginza roofscape, and has a tranquil Japanese garden aesthetic that feels nothing like a mall. Late afternoon light around 4:30–5:15 PM is especially flattering for photos. It's rarely mentioned in guidebooks despite being one of central Tokyo's best urban green escapes. Perfect wind-down before the Kamagi Crystal viewing at 5:00 PM and dinner.

Kyu-Shimbashi Station Museum (Basement) · Tokyo — Tucked underground near Shiodome, this small free museum preserves the original 1872 platform of Japan's first railway line in situ — you literally stand on the original Victorian-era brickwork. It's a hidden history gem that takes only 20–30 minutes and pairs beautifully with a morning walk along the Hamarikyu Garden seawall before or after Shibuya Sky (on a different day). Given your history and culture interests, this is exactly the off-the-radar monument that rewards curious couples. Check it sits within walking distance of your Shimbashi wanderings.

Shibuya Stream Riverside Walk · Tokyo — After Shibuya Sky champagne at 4:00 PM and before your 5:30 PM Yakiniku Kappo Note dinner, take the short stroll along the Shibuya Stream — a landscaped riverside promenade built when the Shibuya River was partially uncovered during redevelopment. It's uncrowded, beautifully lit at dusk, and connects Shibuya Station to Daikanyama in about 15–20 minutes. The contrast between Tokyo's gleaming towers and this quiet green waterway is striking. Grab a craft beer to-go from one of the ground-floor bars to sip riverside as the sun drops.

Amazake Yokocho (Amazake Alley), Nihonbashi · Tokyo — On your last full Tokyo evening (before Tapas Molecular Bar at 5:30 PM), explore this tiny preserved Edo-period alley in Nihonbashi — one of the oldest shopping lanes in Tokyo with traditional lacquerware, chopstick shops, and a tofu purveyor that has been operating for over 300 years. It takes only 20–30 minutes to stroll end to end and sits within easy walking distance of Tapas Molecular Bar's Nihonbashi location. Crowds are light on Sunday afternoons. Pick up a pair of handmade chopsticks as a one-year anniversary keepsake.

Fushimi Inari at Dawn — Before the Crowds · Kyoto — On a free morning during your Kyoto stay, take the first JR Nara Line train from Kyoto Station (departs ~6:00 AM, 5-minute ride) to Fushimi Inari and walk the lower tunnel gates before 8:00 AM — the upper mountain paths are empty, lantern-lit in early light, and utterly cinematic. This is one of Japan's most photographed sites but 90% of visitors never go above the first two torii gate sections; push to Yotsutsuji viewpoint (about 1.5 miles up) for panoramic views over southern Kyoto. Factor in Day 10 (June 3) before your 2:00 PM Samurai Training — you'd be back by 9:30 AM easily.

Pontocho Alley at Dusk · Kyoto — This narrow stone-paved alley running parallel
